Headaches
and Migraine |

We feel strongly that people need to stand up and demand better care for their headaches. We also feel that people who do not experience severe headaches have no idea what headache people are going through. |
|
| According to the medical literature, and widely accepted by headache specialists across the country, 29.5 million people in the US have migraine and only half of them are aware of their diagnosis because of misdiagnosis by physicians and misconceptions fostered by advertisements for over-the-counter remedies. | |
| One in 4 households have a migraine sufferer and women have 3 times the incidence as men. Migraine people outnumber the number of asthmatics and diabetics combined and their quality of life is often very poor because of time missed from their daily activities. They are large users of emergency services and submit more insurance claims than the general population. They also are more likely to lose their jobs and imperil their marital relationships because of debilitating headaches. | |
| The solution to the problem begins with making headache sufferers aware of the very simple criteria for migraine, as defined by the International Headache Society, and making them aware that treatment is available. Over 90% of so-called “sinus headache” patients actually meet the criteria for migraine, thus being misdiagnosed. It is a distinct goal of the International Headache Society and the National Headache Foundation to educate the public about these common misconceptions. | |
